I texted someone very special. I shared a photo of a PoeTree at the local library. Patrons are encouraged to write a short poem on paper shaped like a leaf. Then, they hang it from a paper tree for all to enjoy.
Almost immediately, they texted back: Very nice. Naomi Shihab Nye, “The Art of Disappearing”
I had not read the poem. I texted back: I like the title. “The Art of Disappearing” Isn’t that the magic of words? For a brief moment, you can disappear in a poem, novel, or song lyrics. The world melts around you, and nothing else exists. That’s poetic.
Reply: Yes, and not only can one do that, but why is it important?
Response: To escape. To stop the noise of the world.
Then I read the poem. Now, I am still thinking about it, still escaping.
